Asap Rocky or most times written as A$AP Rocky was born as Rakim Mayers on October 3rd 1988 in Harlem, New York. He was named after rap pioneer Rakim (of Eric B and Rakim). Asap started rapping at the age of 8 and grew up listening and received inspiration from many different rappers in the late 90s and on. He lists harlem based rap crew “The Diplomats” as artists he admired and was influenced by. They had a huge buzz going around the time Asap was starting out and the hometown connection was inspiring.
In August 2011, a song by the name of “peso” set the internet a buzz and was then followed by a video and another video for a song called “Purple Swag”. These two songs put ASAP on the hiphop map. Rumours started to swirl that he signed a $3 million contract with Sony/RCA.
His Mixtape “Live.Love.A$AP” was released in October 2011. It had a really good reception and gave Asap credibility and further expanded his buzz.
A$AP Rocky has potential to be rap’s next big superstar. If he keeps going up on this escalator of success, he might get there sooner rather than later.
